California now included in IRS scandal

The IRS scandal over targeting conservative political groups has now grown to include California.

The Washington Post reports that IRS offices in El Monte and Laguna Niguel, California also targeted Tea Party groups.

Groups with the words 'Tea Party' or 'Patriot' in their names were reportedly flagged by IRS officials.

The IRS also wanted information on donors and supporters of the groups seeking tax-exempt status.

CBS47 has local reaction from a Tea Party Supporter and from the local Democratic Party.

Like hundreds of other Tea Party rallies across the country, the one in Fresno in 2009 may have been targeted by the IRS.

Steve Brandau of was with the Central Valley Tea Party then and is now a Fresno City Councilman. "We're not surprised it's happening at all, we're surprised they're admitting to it," said Brandau.

At the height of the movement, Brandau says he heard from other Tea Party groups being singled out and harassed by the IRS.

The 'T.E.A.' in Tea Party stands for 'Taxed Enough Already' and Braudau believes taxes could be one of the reasons his particular group wasn't targeted. "We are a non-profit, but not tax exempt, so if we sell a tee shirt, we pay taxes on that," said Brandau.

CBS47 also talked to Michael Evans, the chair of the Fresno County Democrat Party. "Common sense and fairness... If that's not what America is about... What are we about?" said Evans.

Usually an unsympathetic foe to the Tea Party and its right of center politics, Evans sounds concerned. "It would be our opinion that whatever the guild lines are, everyone should be scrutinized in an equal manner," said Evans.

President Obama weighed in with a similar response in his first public comment on the matter. "People have to have confidence they're applying it in a non-partisan way," said the President.

Meanwhile, some are calling for a congressional investigation of the IRS to determine if it used its powers for political purposes, and if so, who authorized it.
