Arson Fire at Fresno Condominium Complex

Arson Fire at Fresno Condominium Complex

The search is on for a suspected arsonist following a condo fire in North Fresno. It happened at the Fresno Square condominium complex on Cedar Avenue just south of Shaw Tuesday night.  The blaze left three people homeless and investigators say it appears to have been intentionally set.

Fire investigators went door-to-door Wednesday afternoon questioning witnesses and looking for clues into a fire that destroyed two condos and damaged another.

Fresno Fire Battalion chief Tony Escobedo says, "It's classified as a suspicious fire, an illegally set fire."

The blaze broke out late Tuesday night inside of a downstairs unit.  The man living there told investigators some sort of device was thrown into his unit, causing an explosion.  The flames quickly spread,  displacing three people.

One woman came back to collect her things and said she's thankful she made it out safely.

The fire has been ruled an arson, but investigators haven't confirmed what kind of incendiary device, if any, was used.  The victim also told authorities he has no enemies and no reason to be targeted.  Neighbors say they're a little uneasy.

Neighbor Dylan Lewis says, "Just that people are crazy and they'll run by your house and throw a can of fire and blow it up."

It's the latest in a string of arson fires across the city recently, including several at a Frosty Freeze in southeast Fresno last month and one just this past weekend at Tang Dynasty restaurant in northwest Fresno.

Escobedo says, "Whether or not they're actually connected is not confirmed,  but we're always going to consider the possibility that that might be true."

Investigators also say there was some sort of altercation at the condominiums before the fire broke out.  They have yet to determine if the two incidents are related.
