A Wild Day Planned at Shaver Lake

A Wild Day Planned at Shaver Lake

Martin Wendels from the Fresno County Search and Rescue Unit, visited KSEE 24 Sunrise to talk about the SAR 5K Wild Run at Shaver Lake.

THIS SUNDAY... YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO TEST YOUR PHYSICAL LIMITS AND HAVE FUN... WHILE HELPING TO FUND FRESNO COUNTY'S SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM.

MARTIN WENDELS FROM THE SEARCH AND RESCUE UNIT JOINED US ON KSEE SUNRISE TO TELL US ALL ABOUT THE SAR WILD RUN.

MARTIN WENDELS: we have a 2 mile family hike, a 5k wild run which involves a couple of really nice uphill scrambles, a 10k trail run and a half marathon this year.

GEORGE TAKATA: you say it's wild because?

MARTIN WENDELS: we're running on trails - through the forest - there's no concrete, no asphalt, great views of the lake, there's a few things hidden throughout the forest that you can see - won't necessarily jump at you or scare you but it's very good times.

GEORGE TAKATA: then at the end everyone gets a medal, right?

MARTIN WENDELS: everybody gets a medal - you get a shirt with your package - lots of snacks, barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches and a beer garden.

GEORGE TAKATA: save the best for last - the beer garden - how did this wild run get created - what was behind that?

MARTIN WENDELS: well, we needed a funding mechanism to support the team - and we thought, why not create something that gets folks up into the wilderness - kind of see what we see out there searching and training for folks - create a safe environment - something that's healthy and involves all of the family.

GEORGE TAKATA: temperatures up there also cooler - you can also sell the weather, right?

MARTIN WENDELS: the weather is perfect - probably going to be in the low to mid 60's that morning - it's going to be awesome.

GEORGE TAKATA: are you going to have a lot of search and rescue team people up there?

MARTIN WENDELS: yeah - our whole team will be out there - you'll see us in our orange shirts, and we'll have volunteers up there supporting us and making sure we can pull this off.

GEORGE TAKATA: leading up to sunday - can people sign up - can you register on race day?

MARTIN WENDELS: they can sign up even on race day - absolutely.

GEORGE TAKATA: how much is it?

MARTIN WENDELS: 55 dollars for the half marathon and prices go down for the other trails.

GEORGE TAKATA: the 2 mile family hike is great - I love that idea because it's beautiful in the wilderness - you can take pictures - you can take your time - can you bring the kids?

MARTIN WENDELS: you can bring the kids - we've groomed a trail just for them so you can even bring a stroller and it takes you right down to the lakes - hang out on the beach right there and come back and have a barbecue.

GEORGE TAKATA: how many years?

MARTIN WENDELS: this will be our 3rd year - keeps getting bigger every year.
