4 Hospitalized After Chemical Spill at Hilmar Cheese Co.

In the North Valley four workers from the Hilmar Cheese Company were taken to the hospital.

Fire and hazmat crews were called in around noon Saturday after employees found a mixture of chemicals.

Seven employees were evaluated and four were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Fire crews say it was a minor spill that was quickly cleaned up.

"We already have procedures in place, as well as the plan and all the procedures were followed from the stand point of the employees did exactly what they should do and got out safe," said Jeremy Arahn, Battalion Chief Merced County Fire Department.

Fire crews say a 55-gallon drum was later removed. It remains unknown exactly what chemicals led to the emergency call.

The plant remained in operation during the cleanup.
