Ardmore, PA (Sports Network) - Tiger Woods mixed two bogeys and a birdie in his final seven holes on Friday as he wrapped up an opening-round, 3-over 73 at the U.S. Open.

Woods, a three-time winner of the Open, finished the first round six strokes off the pace of Phil Mickelson at Merion.

After play was halted by darkness on Thursday evening, Woods returned to the 11th green on Friday and kicked in a short par putt. He stumbled to a bogey at the 12th, but atoned for that mistake with a birdie at 13.

Woods parred three in a row before faltering to a bogey on the long par-3 17th. He nearly chipped in for birdie at the last, but settled for a tap-in par.

"I certainly had two 3-putts and I missed a (lot) of putts and the round could have easily been under par. So that's good heading into this afternoon," Woods stated.

The opening 75 was the worst first-round score for Woods since he began the 2006 U.S. Open with a 76 at Winged Foot. He went on to miss the cut that week, and that stands as his last missed cut in a U.S. Open.

Late Friday, Woods appear to injure his left arm on his approach shot to the 11th. But he downplayed that after wrapping up his first round on Friday.

"My left arm didn't feel very good on that shot. A few shots," he admitted. "But overall it was not too bad a round."
