Denver, CO (Sports Network) - The Western Athletic Conference announced Jeff Hurd as its commissioner on Friday.
Hurd, who becomes the sixth commissioner in the WAC's 51-year history, was appointed following the summer meeting of the 2013-14 board of directors held in Denver. He was the conference's interim commissioner since March of 2012, replacing Karl Benson.
"I congratulate Jeff Hurd on his appointment as the Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference," said Seattle University President and 2013-14 board chair Stephen Sundborg. "Commissioner Hurd has proven of bringing the WAC to its current promising status and we look forward as a Board to working with him as he leads the WAC in its further development."
Hurd joined the WAC staff in August 1985 and has served in various roles since. His most recent role prior to the hiring was the conference's senior associate commissioner. He has also served as director of public relations for the Missouri Valley Conference and sports information director at the University of Tulsa.
Effective July 1, the WAC will have six new members: California State University Bakersfield, Chicago State University, Grand Canyon University, The University of Missouri-Kanas City, The University of Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University.
Current members are the University of Idaho, New Mexico State University and Seattle University.
