Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York midfielder Tim Cahill will miss the next 3-4 weeks after suffering a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the club announced on Tuesday.

Cahill sustained the injury during last Saturday's wild 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake after RSL's Yordany Alvarez went in with a hard tackle in the fourth minute of the match.

"It's a very big loss to us," New York head coach Mike Petke said. "Like I said, I think it was a very reckless and careless challenge. I don't think it was intentional. I don't think Salt Lake plays like that, but I think it was just a very careless challenge to the knee and it's going to be a very big loss for us."

Despite the injury, Cahill scored the opening goal against RSL in the 11th minute and played until he was subbed off five minutes from time.

In his first full season with the Red Bulls, the Australia international has enjoyed a stellar campaign, scoring six goals to go along with three assists in 19 starts.

Cahill was named to the MLS All-Star game along with Thierry Henry, but he was forced to withdraw from the match and was replaced on the roster by Philadelphia Union striker Jack McInerney.
