Eden Prairie, MN (Sports Network) - Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams has been ruled out of Sunday's season opener against the Detroit Lions due to a hyperextended right knee.

Williams was injured during the team's third preseason game against San Francisco when he was hit low by 49ers offensive guard Joe Looney. An MRI later revealed a hyperextended right knee and a significant bone contusion.

"He's close," Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said of Williams. "We're optimistic that when we come back next week we'll be able to get some work out of him on the field. But we'll wait and see when Monday rolls around, Tuesday, and then we're back at practice on Wednesday. We are optimistic that we should have a pretty good chance of having him next week."

Williams, a six-time Pro-Bowler, started all 16 games for Minnesota last season, compiling 30 tackles, two sacks and seven passes defensed.

Everyone else for Minnesota is listed as questionable including quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson (illness), cornerback Chris Cook (groin), defensive tackles Sharrif Floyd (knee) and Letroy Guion (finger), linebackers Erin Henderson (heel) and Larry Dean (shoulder), offensive tackle Phil Loadholt (knee), wide receiver Cordarrelle Patteson (back) and safeties Mistral Raymond (shoulder) and Harrison Smith (back).
