Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox placed designated hitter David Ortiz on the 15-day disabled list Sunday as the club announced its Opening Day roster for the 2013 season.
Ortiz hit .318 with 23 home runs and 60 runs batted in over 90 games with the Red Sox last season, but right Achilles tendinopathy will force the left- handed slugger to start the season on the DL.
Boston also placed pitchers Craig Breslow (left shoulder tendinitis) and Franklin Morales (low back strain) on the 15-day DL Sunday, with all three moves retroactive to March 22.
Outfielder Jackie Bradley, Boston's first-round pick in the 2011 amateur draft, had his contract selected by the club and is expected to start in left field when the Red Sox open their season Monday on the road against the New York Yankees.
The Red Sox also designated infielder Mauro Gomez for assignment to finalize their 25-man roster.
