FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Fuego (USL Premier Development League) were back on the pitch at Chukchansi Park Saturday, hosting the Burlingame Dragons in the regular season opener for both clubs.
Burlingame, Fresno’s Central Pacific Division rival, ousted them from the 2016 PDL Playoffs. The Fuego responded by running over the Dragons early and cruising to a 4-0 victory Saturday evening.
Midfielder Jose Cuevas opened the scoring in the fourth minute, kicking across his body and burying it into the back right corner of the net from 20 yards out. In the 10th minute Cuevas made it a 2-0 match, heading a deflection off the cross bar into the back of the net.
Fresno’s third goal was scored in close by midfielder and captain Milton Blanco off a deflection in the box, sending the red hot Fuego to their dressing room with a 3-0 halftime advantage.
In the 78th minute Fresno took a 4-0 lead, when Fuego substitute Diego Casillas (midfielder) scored off a corner kick. Goalkeepers Augustin Rey and Ximo Miralles combined on the shutout, with Rey leaving the game in the in the 82ndminute.
The Fuego will next be on the pitch at Chukchansi Park this Wednesday, May 10 in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup action, hosting La Maquina FC of the United Premier Soccer League in the single-elimination tournament.
Fresno returns to PDL action on Sunday, May 14 at Burlingame. Their next PDL game at home will be Friday, May 26 against the Ventura County Fusion; kickoff time at Chukchansi Park is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The match will be preceded by Fresno Freeze women’s soccer.
