Tulare elects first African American Mayor

TULARE - Carlton Jones is Tulare's first African American Mayor.

Jones is a Fresno Firefighter and served two terms on the Tulare City Council.

Many say in an area where diversity is not always represented politically this is a very big deal.

"This is how I give back. This community has given me so much and I missed this community. I started with the Tulare Fire Department and then went to Fresno. When I got the opportunity to run for city council I jumped on it," Jones said.

He says being the first African American mayor in his hometown means a lot but being first is not the most important-- it's the future leaders who come after.
