Merced, Calif. - The man police say is responsible for killing a 3-year-old girl is caught and booked into the Merced County Jail.
Authorities say 22-year-old Isaac Maldonado hit her while she was using the cross walk to cross the street and fled the scene.
Police say they found Maldonado at a location in Modesto.
Police say not only did he try to change the look of the car, he also did not have a valid driver’s license.
Shawana Bradford, Mother, says she is glad he is caught, but this Christmas season will never be the same without her daughter Dayveonna Polk.
“I’m going to miss her. She got Christmas presents she can’t even open,” says Bradford. “She didn’t deserve this.”
Police say Monday Bradford and her four kids were properly using the crosswalk on West 18th and R streets when a car hit Polk and fled the scene.
Polk later died of heart failure.
“I want my baby back, if I could’ve gave her my heart and soul I would’ve gave it to her,” says Bradford
Police say Maldonado was driving a Purple late 90s four door Honda Accord.
“The tail fin on the Honda Accord that has been removed and he also changed one of the tires and put the spare wheel on to try and throw us off,” says Lt. Jay Struble, Merced Police.
Lt. Struble says when Maldonado was arrested he tried to bail out of jail.
“Our traffic officer did a bail increase, so right now Mr. Maldonado is being held on a half a million dollar bail,” says Lt. Struble.
He faces charges of felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter.
“”He deserves everything they give him,” says Bradford.
