Search continues for 19-year-old who went missing Friday in Merced River

MARIPOSA COUNTY, California - Search teams are still trying to locate a teenager who went missing in the Merced River on Friday, the Mariposa County Sheriff said Monday.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office was informed at 3:45 p.m. that the person went missing an hour earlier.

Ronnie Ray Cole, 19, of Mariposa, apparently jumped into the river.

He and two friends went to the Briceburg area of the Merced River to swim. They were at the area known as "Cable Beach."

Cole jumped into the water wearing blue jeans and black shoes, the Sheriff's Office said.

Witnesses said after Cole jumped in the water, he surfaced and was swimming towards the shoreline when they lost sight of him. The two friends got in their vehicle and attempted to locate him downstream before contacting authorities.

The river is moving very fast and the temperature was estimated to be in the low 50s.

Several agencies continued to search throughout the weekend to no avail. Authorities continue to search for Cole, however, the search has been considerably scaled down.
