REEDLEY, Calif. -- Reedley College hosted an open house of their brand new Flight Science Degree Program on Friday.
Students can earn their degree and their pilots license at the same time..
Dozens of students from all over came right here to Reedley College to see exactly what it takes to get to become a pilot.
"This is a very exciting day. This is after many years of work and dedication and behind the scenes of making it happen," said Dr. Sandra Caldwell, President of Reedley College.
Students got to fly a plane on a simulator, learned about operating drones, and got up close and personal with the engines.
"It is crazy fun to have an event like this and see their eyes yet big on these elementary middle and high school students," said John Johnson, Coordinator of the Flight Science Degree Program.
All of the equipment is what makes up the flight science degree program starting at Reedley College in the Fall.
Students can earn their pilot and flight instructor certificates with hands on training.
"I am so excited, it feels awesome," said Mary Woods, Future Pilot.
Mary Woods is one of the students enrolled in the brand new program. She has always wanted to be a pilot.
"Just being in the plane, I think it is amazing and it is just fascinating," said Woods.
The career is even more enticing for her because there is a worldwide pilot shortage.
"There are unfilled pilot seats right now, there has never been a better time to become an airline pilot and now Reedley is the place to go to become an airline pilot," said Johnson.
There is still time to enroll. This program is the only community college in the state that offers VA Benefits and Federal Financial aid to pay for the schooling.
