Police investigate homicide at Westwood Village Apartments

FRESNO, California - The Fresno Police Department is investigating a homicide in west Fresno on Tuesday.

The man, identified as Derrick Candler, 28, was found dead at the Westwood Village Apartments at Shields and Valentine avenues.

Police say they got a call around 8:30 a.m. from a resident who discovered a unresponsive man in his 20s in their backyard.

Authorities say when they arrived on scene the victim was already deceased. They say he appears to be a victim of gunshot wounds.

Candler was found behind a back fence with a bush on top of him. Investigators believe he was shot Monday night but his body wasn't found until Tuesday morning.

Investigators believe Candler was shot in retaliation for the shooting death of 17-year-old Devonte Divine. Divine was shot and killed near California and Thorne 10 days ago.

Both shootings are considered gang related and no suspects have been named.
