ORANGE COVE, Calif. -
A teacher in Orange Cove has been arrested for allegedly molesting a student.
The Orange Cove Police Department said 23-year old Rigoberto Rangel was a Spanish teacher at Orange Cove High School. They said it was his first year teaching. He was arrested Friday morning at his home in Selma.
The sexual misconduct allegations against Rangel include four felony counts and one misdemeanor. He’s accused of sending harmful matter, like pornography, to seduce a minor. Police said he contacted a minor in order to commit a felony, and arranged a meeting with a child for lewd purposes. He also faces a charge of sexual battery. Police said the victim is a student at the high school, and there could be more victims out there.
Orange Cove Police said on Wednesday that the high school notified authorities, telling them they believed one of their teachers may have had inappropriate contact with a student. Police started their investigation, and they said they felt they had enough evidence against Rangel on Friday to arrest him.
Blanca Estrada lives in Orange Cove and has two teens. She said, "I think it’s kinda sad because I wouldn’t want that to be my child, you know, involved with that teacher, you know?"
According to Orange Cove High’s website, Rangel didn’t just teach Spanish, but he was also on the staff of the boy’s soccer team.
Estrada said though her children didn’t have Rangel as a teacher, she fears more needs to be done by the school or the district to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
"I think the screening process for teachers should be a little bit more strict," stated Estrada.
Rangel was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on Friday morning, but bailed out only after a few hours in jail.
