Missing Coarsegold Child Found Safe in Las Vegas

COARSEGOLD, Calif. - A missing three-year old girl from Coarsegold has been found safe in Las Vegas. She had been missing since Monday afternoon with her 31-year old aunt, Chyanne O'Conner. We aren't identifying the child or showing her image because she is a minor and may be the victim of a crime. The child's mother, Whitney Ashdown, said her sister has been arrested in Las Vegas.

Ashdown said she has no idea why her sister would take her young daughter to Las Vegas. Ashdown said O'Conner is from utah and had been visiting California, so she said maybe her sister was driving to that state, but said she never gave O'Conner permission to take her daughter.

Ashdown and her husband, Justin Johnson, left their young daughter with o'conner yesterday afternoon while they went to the store. They live on the Chukchansi Indian reservation in Coarsegold.

"Seemed like a normal day, she (O'Conner) was playing with the kids and we went to the store and asked if she was going to be there, came back, she was gone, didn't think nothing of it, but time kept going on, I called her," said Ashdown.

After several hours went by, the couple finally called the Madera County Sheriff's Office, and a silver alert was issued. Ashdown said she's grateful her daughter is alive and well.

"We're happy, that was a big relief to get. I wish she could be home so she could trick or treat and have a normal day, but glad she's safe and it's good to know that my sister took care of her," stated Ashdown.

Ashdown said she's disappointed her sister took her daughter without her permission, and said she still doesn't know why she did. Investigators said the child is now in protective custody, and Ashdown said they are anxious to get to Las Vegas to reunite with their daughter.
