Man shot, killed by homeowner during Merced home invasion, police say

MERCED, California - A man is dead after Merced Police say he broke into a home and was shot by the owner on Wednesday night.

Officers received a call from a resident in the 600 Block of west Yosemite Avenue regarding a break in around 10 p.m.

The homeowner said that the suspect kicked in the door to his residence, and so he armed himself with a shotgun.

The suspect continued into the residence toward the homeowner who fired a shot in self defense, police said.

The shot killed the man. The suspect was in his 30s.

The homeowner is cooperating with investigators and said he did not know the suspect, police said.
