Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer held a news conference to give details of an officer involved shooting on Wednesday.

Chief Dyer says it was a known gang member, Anthony Carrera, that shot at officers five times.

Investigators are now trying to figure out why the suspect was not in custody.

The chief says 21-year-old Carrera's rap sheet shows a violent history with recent arrests for burglary, and a parole violation just this past weekend.

Chief Dyer says Carrera was in the CYA Tagger gang, and ended up with the Bond Street Bulldogs.

Carrera was spotted with three others Wednesday afternoon as detectives served a search warrant in the area.

One detective recognized him from a previous incident and police began to track the group. "As the officers were attempting to get out of the vehicle, it was at that time when Anthony Carrera did pull the firearm out, pointed it back towards both of the officers and fired two to three rounds," said Chief Dyer.

Officers returned fire. Neither the suspect nor police were hit,

Carrera was taken into custody in a nearby backyard, which belonged to the home of an ex-girlfriend.

Police recovered the 5-shot revolver the suspect is believed to have used in the shooting.

Chief Dyer says police take 4 to 5 guns away per night from career criminals and gang members.

Just after the incident, the chief reiterated his intent to step up gang suppression efforts.
