Tower District murder investigation continues

Police are searching for clues into the stabbing death of 32-year-old Eric Catlapp.
Police are searching for clues into the stabbing death of 32-year-old Eric Catlapp.  The stabbing happened on Wishon near Fern Avenue at an office building.

"You bet I'm fearful, you bet. I have a baseball bat by my bed and a gun in my closet," said Bobbi Lechman.
The Tower District is a frequent hangout spot for Lechman and she's fed up with the recent crime.
"There are brutal stabbings going on in our streets," said Lechman.
Police say 32-year-old Eric Catlapp was stabbed outside The Hashtag, a 24-hour business hub for young professionals.
Lechman says Catlapp was a friend and it's not the first time this has happened in the area.

"A good friend of mine was just stabbed outside Food King, not a month ago," said Lechman.
Fresno Police are now investigating how the the stabbing occured. They said Catlapp left The Hashtag for just a few minutes and returned with a stab wound. That's when his friends called for help.  Catlapp was transported to CRMC where he later died.  Lechman said Catlapp was a photographer and believes he could have been targeted.
"We're assuming that perhaps he was robbed for his equipment," said Lechman.
Police combed the scene well into Friday afternoon pulling surveillance video from their database along with nearby businesses in hopes of any leads.
"To try to find out if that person who did this was caught on film prior or after the incident to help us solve the case," said Fresno Police Department Deputy Chief, Pat Farmer.
Police said violent crime in the Southwest District is down by 14% and add, the stabbing was an isolated incident.
Christine Haynes said she takes her scooter everywhere and hasn't had a problem.

"Everybody's friendly, everybody's cordial and we just get along down here," said Haynes.
Lechman said she wishes there was more police patrol.

"This is somebody that we know, another person that we know. These are people we know, it's not another statistic to us," said Lechman.

Police urge anyone with any information to call the CrimeStopper's Hotline at 498-STOP.
