A man wanted for murder in Klamath falls, Oregon is behind bars after he made his way to the Valley.
36-year-old Leland Nicholson Jr. was arrested Monday afternoon in Dos Palos by law enforcement.
Police say Nicholson was holed up at a house on Mable Avenue for at least three hours before finally surrendering.
Nicholson finally gave up around noon on Monday and came out peacefully after SWAT used their PA system to convince him.
"He actually was in a crawl space, attic-type insertion that's in the interior of the residence that leads under the house where the plumbing area is," said Deputy Delray Shelton with the Merced County Sheriff's Department.
Dos Palos Police tell us his sister was just arrested Sunday after she apparently hid him from authorities. Come Monday morning, Merced County Sheriff's Department says Nicholson first tried hiding at a friend's home who called police. Then, he went to that friend's brother's home who apparently knew he was wanted and also called police.
"I was in my house, looking out the window," said neighbor, Venita McBride.
McBride said she wasn't worried to learn there was a potential murderer holed up across the street.
"I got enough stuff in there to hit somebody upside the head. You gotta come through the door first," said McBride.
Because the home was in close proximity, they ordered a lockdown for surrounding schools including Marks Elementary which is just down the street.
"All my teacher did was scream get under the desk," said 8-year-old student at Marks Elementary, Adrianna Escobar.
Adrianna said at first she thought it was a practice drill until her teacher explained the situation to the class.
"My teacher, she locked all the doors, she made us feel comfortable and safe by letting us do fun activities," said Adrianna.
Adrianna's mother, Holly Escobar is glad her daughter is safe and happy to be taking her home.
"Gettin' her as fast as I can. I think she's had a long enough day," said Holly Escobar.
Police believe Nicholson had been on the run since Easter Sunday. He was hauled to Merced County Jail where there are plans to have him extradited to Klamath Falls, Oregon.
