Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin appointed James Tyner as the city's first poet laureate.

James Tyner has published more than 20 poems, has worked for the public library for more than a decade and organizes poetry workshops and readings.

Duties as the city's poet laureate include working with local writers, artists and students.

Tyner found his writing voice at Fresno State. "I absolutely love this place. I found myself as a person, I found myself as a writer here. My mentors are here, the people who guided me, made me become the person I am, who found my writing voice," said Tyner.
