Leticia Trejo and 14-year-old Ricardo Santos were killed on Thursday when the Kia they were riding in was smashed into by a big rig. Both were heading East on Manning Avenue and Fowler Avenue on Thursday afternoon. California Highway Patrol says the driver of the semi, Alonso Hernandez, was driving under the influence.
The family of the victims says the driver of the Kia, Reynalda Santos, is still at Community Regional Medical Center in a coma. The family member we spoke to says the driver is his sister. Another passenger in the frontseat, Efren Santos, is the family member's father. The same family member says Ricardo and Trejo were is brother and mom.
Highway Patrol's public information officer Axel Reyes says Hernandez will be charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run and driving under the influence.
Reyes says Hernandez side swipped another big rig after hitting the Kia. They say Hernandez then drove to a truck stop where he ran from his truck. An off-duty officer spotting Hernandez running and the damage to his truck. The off-duty officer followed Hernandez. Hernandez will be charged with two counts vehicular manslaughter, DUI and felony hit and run.
