After years of bargaining, a deal has finally been struck between the Fresno Unifed School District and its teachers.
“All those in favor say aye. Aye. All those opposed say no. Thank you,” said Valerie Davis, School Board President.
The Fresno Unified School Board's unanimous vote to ratify an agreement between teachers and the district was a huge crowd-pleaser Wednesday night.
“This agreement represents a united commitment to improving the teaching and learning environment for our students and staff.”
Negotiations had gone back and forth the last two years without ever reaching a common ground.
This new deal gives teachers improved health benefits and a total of a 6.2% raise. Some of which will be collected as back pay, meaning the district must cut retroactive checks totaling $14 million.
“We're very pleased with the outcome of our bargaining for this year,” said Eva Ruiz, FTA President.
FTA president, Eva Ruiz, says her group is excited to move forward.
“Now our teachers can work on creating their classrooms for this next year. If we were still in contract negotiations we would be building up for more protesting, more letter writing,” said Ruiz.
Superintendent Michael Hanson is glad that is no longer necessary and considers this contract to be a huge victory.
“For our families, teachers and employees to know that the checks were in the mail, that the health benefit package was being strengthened and that people have stability in their lives. That's a critical and important thing for our board to be able to stand behind, so we're very pleased,” said FUSD Superintendent Michael Hanson.
Fresno Unified is the 4th largest school district in California. It serves more than 73,000 students and employs nearly 12,000 people.
