Council Candidate Addresses Controversy
Fresno city council candidate Mike Wells spent tuesday doing more damage control once again publicly apologizing for his campaign flyer which appears to show the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz - Birkenau.
"I find it very offensive. It's at odds with my faith and the multi-faith community that I've been a part of for many years," said Mike Wells, Fresno City Council candidate.
The District 7 hopeful says he wanted an image that represented urban blight. His graphic designer, a female volunteer, presented the photo and wells signed off on it thinking it was a rundown building in fresno. Wells ultimately fired the woman for the error, but is also taking personal blame.
"I didn't ask where she found the image, I didn't ask if it was from Fresno or not. I didn't ask if this was the original image, if it had been doctored and I certainly should have done that," said Wells.
It's not clear what google word search the graphic designer used to find the offensive image.
During his press conference Monday, Councilman Clint Olivier offered his thoughts.
"Auschwitz - Birkenau doesn't come up when you Google boarded up house, so someone put it there and then circulated it to the people I represent, my neighbors," said Fresno City Councilman Clint Olivier.
Political analyst don larson has worked on a number of campaigns. He says the trouble is that most everyone who volunteers does it in addition to holding down a day job.
"Consequently they're tired from what they do and they're trying to do the best they can as community involved people and things do slip into the cracks," said Political Analyst Don Larson.
