Heat tests AC technicians, power crews

Fresno, Calif. - The record heat in parts of the Valley was enough to frustrate many people, especially the ones without air conditioning, or even power. Both air conditioning technicians and Pacific Gas & Electric crews are prepared for a long hot week ahead.

It's an important job most people wouldn't choose to do.

"It feels pretty hot. Haha. It's approximately probably about 130 degrees in this attic," said Allbritten Air Conditioning Technician Aaron Wagner.

As the sun beats down on Valley homes residents who need his help are sweating it out.

"It feels like you're cooking. It feels like you're in an oven," said Bonnie Yantis, a resident having her air conditioning repaired.

Once Wagner makes the repair relief sets in.

"In the house it was about 92 degrees and now that it's working it's just barely starting to climb down," said Wagner.

But at the Allbritten call center the line of customers continues to grow.

"Things have durastically changed. It is very much weather driven as soon as the heat comes the phones are crazy. Phones all day, phones all evening. Our dispatchers answer the phones all through the night, so it keeps them really busy," said Andrea Johnson, Allbritten Marketing Director.

The heat is also knocking out power in neighborhoods across the Valley including Clovis.

"We came home from the mountains and the whole block was black," said Jimmy Urrutia, a Clovis Resident.

As Pacific Gas and Electric crews work on problems residents try to find solutions.

"I was temped to just drive in my truck until the air came on," said Urrutia.

Crews on the front lines say this is just the beginning. Knowing it'll be a tall task keeping Valley residents powered up and cool in record setting heat this summer.

"Just keep going just knowing you're going to have a nice vacation at the end of the summer," said Wagner.

Right now it's about a two day wait to get air conditioning repaired in town and almost all of the power outages were heat related.
