FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Police Department put out extra patrols on Saturday. Their focus was bike and pedestrian safety.
The department said there were 51 bike and pedestrian fatalities from 2013 to 2015.
On Saturday, extra officers patrolled spots where those accidents have happened. Officers were looking for violations, like speeding, illegal turns, not stopping for signs, signals, and failing to yield in crosswalks. They also watched for jaywalkers.
Cyclist Miranda Peters said, "Knowing that something's going into effect that, that makes you a little bit safer outside, definitely is a good thing."
This comes after the City of Fresno approved it's Active Transportation Plan. That means new bike paths, bike routes and sidewalks are in the works.
