OROSI, Calif. - The CHP is looking for the driver who fatally struck an 83-year-old man this week. It happened on Highway 63 at Miller Avenue in Orosi.
A busy 4 lane road in Orosi turned into a crime scene early Tuesday morning. Magdalena Rodriguez was crossing Highway 63 at Miller Avenue with an elderly couple to get to Orosi Memorial Hall to pick up food when 83 year old Camilo Tovar was fatally struck.
Rodriguez says she got to the other side of the street and asked her friend for her husband, they turned around and saw him laying in the middle of the road about 100 feet away.
"The motorist who struck the pedestrian failed to stop at the collision scene and fled northbound on state route 63 at high speed," CHP Officer Michael McWain said.
He also said the three were not on a designated cross walk but the driver should not have fled the scene. They've checked surveillance video in the area but all they know is that the vehicle involved was a dark colored sedan.
"The car should have some damage. The pedestrian was crossing the road utilizing a metal walker and there should be a substantial amount of front end damage on the front of the vehicle from the walker and the pedestrian," officer McWain said.
According to Rodriguez, the couple was married for more than 57 years. They were her neighbors and they spent a lot of time together. She described them as good people and said Tovar was very kind.
If found, the driver could face charges for felony hit and run and manslaughter. Anyone with information is asked to contact law enforcement.
