FRESNO, California - The Fresno County District Attorney's Office has filed criminal charges against a man accused of driving drunk and killing a couple this past weekend.
Charges have been filed against 25-year-old Michael Merritt-Hutchins; he was arrested on Saturday.
Police say the couple, Daniel Mendez and his wife Ramona Mendez were delivering newspapers for The Fresno Bee, when Merritt-Hutchins rear-ended their car at more than 80-miles-per-hour, near Temperance and Kings Canyon in Fresno.
Merritt-Hutchins has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving with a 0.08% blood alcohol level causing injury, and driving under the influence causing injury.
He is currently in custody at the Fresno County Jail. He faces a potential sentence of up to 12 years in custody if convicted of the charges.
