FRESNO, Calif. - Betting on sports may soon be legal in the State of California. On Monday morning, the US Supreme Court voted to get rid of a federal law that bans sports gambling.
As the law currently stands, if you want to bet on sports legally, you can only do it in the State of Nevada. But, imagine if you could wager on sports at one of our local casinos. The Supreme Court just made it possible to do so.
Mohamed Kastiro is a huge sports fan. He said, "It's a hobby. And I think for some people, like sports betting is a way to make the game funner."
Stephen Trembley with Fresno State Athletics said nothing is known yet until the state makes it legal. The NCAA announced they are reviewing the decision to understand the overall implications to college sports.
"We'll see what happens at the federal level. We'll see what happens at the state level both in California and across the country," stated Trembley.
Some sports fans said they look forward to the opportunity to gamble.
Kastiro ended, "I see more liberty. I think when you give Americans more freedom to do what they want, I think it's always a good thing."
The American Gaming Association estimates that Americans spend about $150 billion dollars a year on illegal sports wagers.
