CHP officer injured in Visalia highway crash

Officer Martinez suffered minor injures and transported to KDMC

VISALIA, Calif. - A California Highway Patrol officer suffered minor injuries after a highway crash in Visalia on Wednesday.

Just after 4 p.m., CHP got a radio transmission from Officer Martinez who said he was involved in a traffic collision on Highway 198 east of Plaza Drive.

The officer's vehicle was parked on the side of the highway while he assisted another driver whose car had broken down. At the time of the accident, Martinez was sitting in his vehicle waiting for a tow-truck to arrive.

Shavonne Navarro, 30, of Tulare, was driving 55 mph on Highway 198 when traffic began to slow in front of her, CHP said after an investigation. Navarro applied her brake and swerved to the right to avoid a collision.

Her vehicle skidded off of the road and collided with the parked CHP vehicle on the right shoulder. The CHP vehicle was forced forward and struck a highway sign.

Both vehicles sustained moderate to major damage, CHP said. Martinez was transported to Kaweah Delta Medical Center by ambulance for his injuries.

Navarro was not injured.

CHP said drugs an alcohol are not a factor in this accident.
