MADERA, Calif. - A car burst into flames just feet away from other cars and an apartment building in Madera.
Madera police released video of flames shooting from the car. You can hear a couple of explosions.
The inferno broke out around 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Witnesses said it only took several minutes for flames to engulf the vehicle at an apartment complex on South Granada Drive.
"When I woke up, I heard a loud boom," said neighbor Dan Poore. "I thought someone was kicking my door."
Poore woke up from a sound sleep to the raging fire outside. The flames just feet from his apartment building.
"I was worried about the apartment next door, the two story units. The fire was just way in the air, 15-20 feet tall," said Poore.
Madera police said the vehicle's owner told them, it had electrical problems.
It's unclear if someone was driving or the vehicle had been parked at the time it caught fire.
We showed the video to Mike Thibodeaux with Electric Laboratories.
"That was a pretty violent fire," said Thibodeaux.
Thibodeaux said there could be a number of reasons why the vehicle suddenly burst into flames.
"It sure looked like there was some accelerant involved, whether it was a gas tank, or fuel leak going on, that really got it going," said Thibodeaux.
Poore said he's happy Madera fire responded quickly and put out the fire before it spread.
"The fire department took care of the problem," said Poore. "They had it under control."
No one was hurt in the fire.
The Madera Fire Department is investigating the incident.
