Breaking: 12 Fresno Pacific Swimmers Hospitalized After Chlorine Hazmat

Mechanical Failure Believed To Be To Blame

15 Fresno Pacific University swimmers are recovering from a chlorine spill that sent 12 of them to nearby hospitals. The Fresno Fire Department responded to the pool at Hamilton near Winery at around 1:45 Tuesday afternoon for a possible hazmat situation.  The Fresno Fire Department says one swimmer is being treated for minor chemical burns, and the rest of those transported to hospitals were having inhalation problems.   Investigators say they a Chlorine malfunction caused the accident.

"We've identified that the chlorinator was actually being worked on at that time and for some reason while it was being worked on, it caused an over release of chlorine into the pool" said Hector Vasquez of the Fresno Fire Department.   Vasquez says the Chlorinator has been shut off.   Officials say the swim and dive team are made up of male and female athletes.  This accident also forced the evacuation of to classrooms nearby.
