Avenal High School student arrested for making shooting threat, police say

AVENAL, California - A 17-year-old Avenal High School has been arrested, accused of making a shooting threat against the school.

Avenal police say the teenage suspect took to social media yesterday, posting photos of himself with what appeared to be a gun.

Officers served a search warrant at the suspect's home. They say they called in a swat team-- because it was deemed "high-risk."

The teen was taken into custody without incident. Police did not recover a firearm-- but they did find an airsoft gun that was used in the threat.

Police say the suspect called the incident a hoax.

"The suspect indicated this was a hoax and he did not have any plans to physically carry out the threat," said Chief Russell Stivers with the Avenal Police Department.

Police say they do not consider these types of threats a joke, and they're asking parents to monitor what their children are doing on social media.

In light of what happened more than half of the student body stayed home today.
