Assemblyman denies claims of possible sexual assault

VISALIA, Calif. - Assemblyman Devon Mathis is denying claims of possible sexual assault that have been leveled against him.

Sacramento police told CBS47 the allegations against Assemblyman Mathis came from a third party and investigators are looking into it.

On Thursday, a blog called "American Children First" posted a story reporting that Assemblyman Mathis allegedly sexually assaulted a drunk and unconscious staffer.

On Saturday, Assemblyman Mathis issued a statement to Eyewitness News:

"While this is completely unsubstantiated allegations and purely false gossip from a male blogger.  I believe it is critical that all women know if they are assaulted they will be taken seriously and protected.  If that means I have a bad headline until this is proven false, I'm ok with that."

Sacramento Police Department issued the following:

"This was brought to our attention by a third party and we are beginning to look into it now.  Unfortunately due to the nature of the investigation, the Department can not comment on any details."

The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office released this statement:

"If an allegation of criminal conduct occurring within Sacramento County is reported, it is investigated by the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction over the offense. The District Attorney does not comment on whether or not an individual is under investigation."
