18-year-old dies after severing leg in horrific Fresno County crash Tuesday

FRESNO COUNTY, California - A young man from Fresno died after severing his leg in a horrific crash in Fresno County on Tuesday night, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

The crash happened at 8:18 p.m. in the area of Chestnut and Annadale avenues -- south of Jensen Avenue.

The 18-year-old driver was going south Chestnut Avenue in a 2006 Honda at a high rate of speed, CHP said.

For unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off the road and collided with an electric pole. The Honda was wrapped around the pole.

The driver was pinned inside and had to be extracted by fire personnel.

He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, but he died in the ambulance, CHP said.

It is still unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
