In Fowler, a federal investigation is underway following an armed robbery at the local post office. It took place Thursday evening around 5:45.
The driver of the truck is contracted to haul mail for the U.S. Postal Service. He was reportedly held up at gun point as he picked up a load of Fowler's outgoing mail.
“It would be parcels, letters, all the outgoing mail that would be heading out to go to the mail processing center so it could go out on the trucks and planes to go across the country,” said Jeff Fitch, Public Information Officer with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
It's unclear whether the suspect knew something in particular was in the mail.
“We're trying to determine exactly what was taken,” said Fitch.
Fowler is not accustomed to crimes like this.
“We have a sense of family so for something to happen like this in Fowler, it just shakes things up,” said David Cardenas, Mayor of Fowler.
Mayor David Cardenas took a moment to greet the driver Friday.
“I just told him I was happy nothing happened to him,” said Cardenas.
Here is a description of the suspect:
25 to 30 years old.
5' 8" to 5' 9".
150 to 200 pounds.
He was reportedly wearing a fake beard.
What's interesting is someone matching the same description reportedly pulled off the same type of robbery last month at a post office 100 miles away in Patterson.
Kathryn Fine wants to help catch him.
“As I've worked today I've checked out every guy walking down the sidewalk to see if it fits the description. Unfortunately I thought it was kind of a vague description, so there were a lot of guys that fit the description,” said Kathryn Fine of Fowler Ace Gifts.
