A former gubernatorial candidate with a checkered past is now wanted by authorities for attempted murder, child endangerment, and cruelty to animals.

The search is on for Tye "Glenn" Champ after a shooting in the Fresno County foothills Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say that just after 4 p.m., Champ allegedly shot a neighbor in the stomach and his horse.

The man was flown by helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery. His condition is unknown. The horse died.

Deputies responded to the 31000 block of Lynx in Prather for a reported shooting.

Deputies say that witnesses told them a disagreement started over work being done on a private road. Witnesses identified Champ as the shooter.

Witnesses told deputies that Champ confronted the 40-year-old victim and his juvenile son and then shot the 40-year-old with a small black pistol.

As the victim and his son fled, Champ allegedly fired multiple shots, striking and killing a horse.

Champ took off in an older blue four-door Volkswagen sedan. Authorities believe he is still armed with the small black pistol used in the shooting.

Earlier this year, Champ made an unsuccessful run for governor, losing in the June primary.

The Prather resident drew controversy because he once served time in Corcoran State Prison.

Champ was arrested in 1998 and served 11 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the death of a Fresno County man.

Champ is also on the sex offender registry for soliciting underage prostitutes.

If you have any information about his whereabouts, please call Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.  Your tip will remain anonymous.
