Sidelines Spotlight: Caruthers' Zack Flores

Zack Flores (Caruthers High) made first-team all-West Sequoia League last season as a sophomore, his first year on varsity. Since the season ended, he's been traveling a lot getting ready for Year Two...and beyond.

"I think of Texas, I think of football. And I know the best are gonna be going to Texas and I want to go there."

How about next week?

Zack Flores was invited to USA Football's Under-17 National Development Program. It's in Austin, and it's by invite only for the top athletes in the country.

"A lot of competition, a lot of different people are gonna be there," says the junior tackle at Caruthers High. "But we're all gonna be there for the same reason, to represent our town, our high school, our coaches well. We're all gonna be playing at a high level."

And USA Football is paying for the expenses.

This won't be the first football camp Zack Flores will attend this offseason. He's already been to San Jose State and Chabot, and he plans on going to Sacramento.

Also, he went to a camp in Hayward in March, which is how he got noticed for the U-17 national team.

"When I get there in football mode, I call it football mode, I don't see myself as a selfish person," smiles Flores. "But I'm there to make myself better so I can bring that to Caruthers."

'So you're a wanted commodity.'

'How does that make you feel?'

"It makes me feel pretty excited."

Also, confident.

Flores gets to suit up in full pads, meaning he gets to hit people. He'll also be learning from high school, college and NFL personnel.

"It's gonna make me a lot better, I can feel it's gonna make me a lot better," he says.
