A South Valley airman has been killed while on duty overseas.
Herman "Tre" Mackey III of Bakersfield was killed in a plane crash north of China on Friday.
The Mackey family confirms that airman Tre Mackey was killed Friday aboard a KC-135 Stratotanker when the aircraft crashed 100 miles west of Manas Air Base in Kyrgyzstan, north of China.
Two other crewmembers were killed in the crash according to the Air Force, which released their names on Sunday: Capt. Mark Tyler Voss, 27, of Boerne, Texas; and Capt. Victoria “Tori” Ann Pinckney, 27, of Colorado Springs
Tre Mackey was the boom operator aboard the plane, which is the person responsible for guiding fueling hose into the other aircraft in mid flight.
Tre Mackey graduated from Bakersfield High School in 2001 before immediately entering the air force.
Mackey is also survived by a daughter, Payton; his mother; three sisters and two brothers.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to the Air Force.
