Signs advising drivers to move over or slow down are being installed across the state.
It's an effort to protect highway workers and emergency crews.
The signs will say "Move over or slow down for stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles."
This year, Caltrans has 650 construction projects in the works, which means more workers will be out on the highways.
Sharri Bender Ehlert, Caltrans District 6 Director said, "Highway construction and maintenance work is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. And since 1924, 178 Caltrans workers have been killed on the job."
One hundred new signs are being installed throughout the state.
