The Fresno County Sheriff is in Washington D.C. sounding off on immigration.

Sheriff Mims joined a panel of other representatives from across the U.S. who were invited to the White House to talk about the lack of immigration reform.

Sheriff Mims says those living in the Valley illegally, often find themselves victims. "What I hear from our farmers is they have employees that are assaulted, robbed in the fields while their working, their cars are stolen, but they're afraid to report the crimes because of their immigration status."

The gathering was ahead of a senate vote scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

President Obama invited the bi-partisan group of elected officials, law enforcement and business leaders to the White House to show Congress there is widespread support for immigration reform.

The President has made immigration a top priority of his second term.

Four Republican and four Democrat Senators, known as the "Gang o Eight" have been working for months to craft a bill that can muster bi-partisan support.

Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader said, "The Gang of Eight has done its work, now it is time for the gang of a hundred to do its work.

The plan creates a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants, but only after certain border security requirements are met. "So the bill has some serious flaws and we need to be serious about trying to fix them," said Senator McConnell.

Some Republicans are concerned the legislation does not do enough to secure the borders. Border patrol officials say in the first six months of 2013 more than 189,000 people have been caught illegally crossing the border, a 13% increase from last year.
