CBS47's Mike Scott visited Sheridan Elementary in Orange Cove for this week's Cool School, because there are some 5th graders who really care about animals.
The students wanted to do something special for animals so they raised money to adopt a sea lion at the Chaffee Zoo's new Sea Lion Cove.
That made them feel good, but then the students decided to do even more.
They started collecting dog food, treats and toys to donate to the Orange Cove Animal Shelter.
What started in one classroom, soon spread campus-wide.
5th grade student Cecilia Hernandez said, "Well, at first it was just a classroom thing, but then we got the student council to help us on it. And we told the student council - if they could spread the word around the school, so we can get more things to donate to the dogs."
Student Council President Stephanie Garcilazo said, "The past few days they've been donating money, or either supplies for the dogs, and we're gonna give them to the O.C. Shelter, so we can get it into them for the Christmas present.
Teacher Mrs. May Larson said, "I'm very proud. I'm very proud, I mean, I'm thinking - these kids are going to go into massive adult, they're going to make an even bigger difference. They are the advocates, they are gonna reach out. And I am just in awe of that."
The students are going to be rewarded for their hard work with a special field trip, hopefully before the end of the school year. They're going to get to go to the Chaffee Zoo, and visit the new Sea Lion Cove, in person!
